LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska goes into its opener against
Western Kentucky with fans still wondering who'll be the
eighth-ranked Cornhuskers' starting quarterback.
     Coach Bo Pelini is deciding among Zac Lee, the senior incumbent;
Cody Green, the top backup in 2009; and redshirt freshman Taylor
Martinez.
Offensive lineman Ricky Henry said he expects it to be a
last-minute decision Saturday night.
The Huskers have their highest preseason ranking since 2001 and
will be in position to make a run at the national championship if
their offense improves.
The Ndamukong Suh-led defense carried the Huskers a year ago
while the offense chugged along to a No. 99 national ranking.
The Sun Belt Conference's Hilltoppers have lost 20 games in a
row.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Standout defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh
and seven other Huskers will be in Lincoln
to join the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame.
Suh won the Outland, Lombardi, Nagurski and Bednarik awards and
was a Heisman finalist for his play last season.
Because of his national recognition, Suh didn't have to wait the
minimum 10 years to be considered for selection.
Joining him will be former Huskers Dan Alexander, Steve
Lindquist, Todd Millikan, Ed Periard, Bob Pickens, Carlos Polk and
Chris Spachman.
From smaller Nebraska colleges, new Hall of Fame members will be
Mike Sallier of Doane College and Noland Urban of Nebraska
Wesleyan.
All 10 will be inducted Friday and honored at Memorial Stadium
when Nebraska plays Western Kentucky on Saturday.

AMES, Iowa (AP) - Iowa State has kicked off the season with a
27-10 home victory over Northern Illinois. Alexander Robinson
rushed for 97 yards and two touchdowns last night. Quarterback
Austen Arnaud added 265 yards passing and a touchdown run. The
Cyclones' new-look defense held the Huskies to just 249 yards of
offense.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) - The Minnesota Gophers have opened the
season with a 24-17 win at Middle Tennessee. Duane Bennett rushed
for a career-high 187 yards, and fullback Jon Hoese scored three
touchdowns and recovered a fumble.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - Iowa says it's extending football coach
Kirk Ferentz's contract through 2020 in a deal that totals nearly
$3.7 million a year. His current deal runs through 2015 and pays
him roughly $3 million per season. School officials expect the new
deal to be signed today.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - Iowa freshman tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz
has apparently lived up to his billing as one
of the nation's top recruits. Coach Kirk Ferentz says Fiedorowicz
will play against Eastern Illinois tomorrow. Ferentz usually
prefers to play upperclassmen over highly touted younger players.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The Minnesota Vikings have wrapped up the
preseason by beating Denver 31-24 at home. Broncos rookie Tim Tebow
outplayed Minnesota's Tarvaris Jackson in the backup quarterback
comparison, but the Vikings forced four first-half turnovers and
got the victory.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The Detroit Tigers have avoided a three-game
sweep at Minnesota with a 10-9 victory behind Gerald Laird's solo
home run in the 13th inning. Danny Valencia had three hits and two
RBIs for the Twins, who are three-and-a-half games ahead of the
Chicago White Sox in the AL Central.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire was
ejected from the game against Detroit after arguing a close play at
second base. He came out to argue after crew chief Joe West ruled
that Alexi Casilla dropped the ball and called Austin Jackson safe
at second.
