SUMMARY:Yankton Carfit Event with USD & AAA
DESCRIPTION:Yankton CarFit Event Helps Improve Comfort and Safety “Fit” for Older Drivers\nFree CarFit event for older adults coming to Yankton on April 25. Appointments available now.\nYANKTON\, SD – March 24\, 2025 – To help the 10\,000 Americans turning 65 every day and all senior drivers find a better “fit” with their cars for comfort and safety\, mobility experts are hosting a safety program designed to help older drivers and their families. CarFit is a national program developed by AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) which is designed to give a quick\, yet comprehensive check on how well an older driver and their vehicle fit together.\nThe Department of Occupational Therapy at the University of South Dakota will conduct CarFit check-ups in Yankton:\nWHEN:            2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. – Friday\, April 25\, 2025\nWHERE:         504 W. 27th Street – Yankton\, SD 57078 (Yankton Elks Lodge #994).\nHOW:              Appointments for the event can be made by calling AAA Yankton at (605) 444-2764 or emailing tgillam@aca.aaa.com.\n\nThe event is being organized by University of South Dakota Occupational Therapy\, AAA Yankton\, and Yankton Elks Lodge #994.\n“As we age\, changes in our vision\, flexibility\, strength\, range of motion and even size and height may make us less comfortable and reduce our control behind the wheel\,” said Mackenzie Feldhacker\, occupational therapist and faculty member in the Department of Occupational Therapy at the University of South Dakota. “CarFit provides older adults with the tools to understand and apply the safety features of their car.”\n“AAA has\, for more than 120 years\, been the nation’s leading advocate for motorists and travelers\, with a key focus on traffic safety and safe driving\,” said Terri Gillam\, retail manager for AAA in Yankton. “We’re pleased to collaborate with USD’s Department of Occupational Therapy and Yankton Elks Lodge on this event\, and we invite older drivers across the area to join us on the afternoon of April 25th. We find that nearly everyone who participates in a CarFit event finds benefits in their comfort and safety in operating their vehicle.”\n“The Yankton Elks Lodge # 994 is proud to team with AAA Yankton\, AARP\, the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA)\, and the Department of Occupational Therapy at the University of South Dakota to host the CarFit program\,” said Eric Taylor\, exalted ruler\, Yankton Elks Lodge. “We know that this will have a positive impact on our community.”\n\nAt a CarFit event\, trained volunteers complete a 12-point checklist with each driver. A CarFit check takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. Among the items checked:\n\n\nCorrect position of driver’s seat\n\n\nDriver’s ability to easily reach pedals\n\n\nProper adjustment of mirrors\n\n\nOccupational therapists are on hand also to provide a consultation\, if needed\, which will teach drivers how to maintain and improve aspects related to their driving health. The therapist can also provide information to participants addressing individual needs\, including information about local community resources on exercise\, nutrition and other programs to help keep them safe on the road.\n“It is critically important that mature drivers make safety a personal priority\,” said Feldhacker.  “Driving today is more difficult than ever because of increased traffic congestion\, longer commute distances\, new technology and faster speeds. Older drivers can take important measures to mitigate the stress associated with driving.”\nOlder drivers can also check with their local AARP office to take a driver safety refresher course for older road users or look into occupational therapy driving evaluation programs for individualized assessments and recommendations. CarFit represents an extension of those classroom programs\, and an opportunity for older drivers to make sure their personal vehicles are adjusted to their needs.\n\nFor more information about the CarFit program and what participants can expect during a check\, visit https://car-fit.org/.\n\n\n \n \n\nAbout AAA\nAAA provides automotive\, travel\, and insurance services to more than 65.2 million members nationwide and more than 100\,000 members in South Dakota. AAA advocates for the safety and mobility of its members and has been committed to outstanding road service for more than 100 years. AAA is a non-stock\, membership corporation working on behalf of motorists\, who can map a route\, find local gas prices and electric vehicle charging stations\, discover discounts\, book a hotel\, and track their roadside assistance service with the AAA Mobile app (AAA.com/mobile) for iPhone\, iPad and Android.
