SUMMARY:Mead Museum - Traveling Exhibit - Drowning in Dirt
DESCRIPTION:Join the Mead Museum for the Traveling Exhibit: Drowning in Dirt February 2nd through April 30th. \nDrowning in Dirt:Joseph Hutton and the Dustbowl. A soil scientist’s quest to save the farmer by preserving the land \nJoseph Hutton\, one of the first soil scientists of South Dakota\, brought a new concept to the state: not all soil was the same. And different soils required different farming practices in order to be sustainable.  \nWhen Hutton arrived at South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (now South Dakota State University) in 1911\, he studied the negative effects of farming practices of the day which depleted the soil nutrients and caused erosion. Hutton’s views on soils were a contradiction to common knowledge at the time\, and he predicted the dust Bowl 20 years before it happened! \nThis exhibit utilizes Hutton’s photography\, poetry\, speeches\, and research notes to illustrate the devastation the drought had on farmers of the 1920s and 1930s in South Dakota through the eyes of a soil scientist. The exhibit will feature Yankton County Artifacts from the 1930s.  “Drowning in Dirt” traveling exhibit was created in 2022 by the South Dakota Agricultural Museum of Brookings in partnership with the SD Humanities Council. The Mead Museum is open Monday-Saturday noon to 4pm. Admission is $10 for adults\, $8 for 65+ and $5 for youth. Mead Museum members are free. \nFind more information online at www.meadbuilding.org/exhibits.

SUMMARY:SHRED DAY YANKTON
DESCRIPTION:First Dakota announces upcoming Shred Day \nIdentity Theft remains one of the fastest-growing crimes in the United States. It has been ranked one of the top consumer concerns for several years. First Dakota National Bank wants to help by giving you the opportunity to shred any personal information free of charge. Please plan to participate in our annual Shred Day on Wednesday\, April 29 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.\, at 1800 Summit Street (parking lot across from the Yankton High School). \nDakota Data Shred from Sioux Falls will take care of the shredding. Remember\, when you throw something in the trash\, it is available to anyone willing to overlook your trash’s disgusting smells and textures. So\, a good rule of thumb is anything that has a signature\, account number\, social security number\, or medical and legal information should be shredded. Here are a few more suggestions: address labels from junk mail and magazines\, ATM receipts\, bank statements\, copies of birth certificates\, canceled and voided checks\, credit card bills\, investment documents\, employee pay stubs\, employment records\, college IDs\, pre-approved credit card applications\, receipts with checking account numbers\, report cards\, resume’s\, tax forms\, used airline tickets and utility bills. \nKeep your identity safe and mark your calendar for Shred Day at First Dakota. \nFirst Dakota was founded in 1872 and holds the first bank charter issued in all of Dakota Territory. It has 17 full-service banking locations in 12 South Dakota cities. It also has six loan production offices throughout South Dakota\, North Dakota\, Nebraska\, and Iowa.
