In recognition of National Water Safety Month, Yankton County Search and Rescue is hosting a children’s life jacket giveaway on May 24th to promote youth water safety. As time for summer recreation approaches, the event will serve as an important reminder that wearing a life jacket is a key part of drowning prevention. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are over 4,000 fatal unintentional drownings in the U.S. each year and is the leading cause of unintentional injury related death for children ages 1-4.

Yankton County Search and Rescue will give away 100 life jackets in assorted children’s sizes at the event, which will be held in Riverside Park from 6-8 pm. Team members will also be present for a meet and greet to display various equipment, hand out life jackets, and serve free hot dogs, chips, and drinks.

Yankton County Search and Rescue is a volunteer organization under the direction of Yankton County Emergency Management. The team is comprised of 20 members which includes several who are certified in public safety diving, rope rescue, and emergency medical services. Canine resources certified in human remains detection is an additional team asset. Yankton County Search and Rescue serves communities throughout the tri-state region of southeast South Dakota, northeast Nebraska, and northwest Iowa.
